Parkinson's Young Onset Group (YOGs)
YOG Update
Future Meetings
In April we meet on Anzac Day at the Bedford Bowling Club for a game of bowls and some fun, and to help Tara, one of our youngest YOGS, to raise funds for the YOGS Scholarship fund, to support a PhD student to work at ParkC.
On Sunday 28th June we return to The Niche at 2pm, for our regular meet where we will be hearing from a speaker from Commonwealth CareLink.
We meet again socially on 31st August at the Niche in Aberdare Rd, Nedlands from 2pm – 4pm.
On October 26th Fremantle Soroptimists will help us hold a “Party for Parkinson’s” to enable YOGS to reach out to our community and friends and raise awareness about Parkinson's disease. There will be two (YOGS) speakers who will each tell of their journey with Parkinson’s. All funds raised from the party will go to Parkinson’s WA. Everyone reading this, is welcome to join us.
Our final meet for 2009 will be a Christmas gathering on 14 December again at The Niche.
Past Meetings
- 22nd February 2009: Approximately 35 Young Onset People (diagnosed before age 55) met for a BBQ outside The Niche. The weather was perfect and so was the picnic that was organised. It was great to meet old and new (YOG) Pders!
- 14th December 2008: Christmas Party at The Niche
- 23rd November 2008: An afternoon tea with Dr Roger Barker and Dr Anna Goodman from Cambridge University (UK). This was a fundraising event to support our Scholarship Fund at Edith Cowan University. Family and the people from the general community came and shared afternoon tea with the visiting doctors from 2pm to 3pm. At 3pm the Doctors spoke to YOGS and answer prepared questions for them.
- 26th October 2008: Visit from Fiona Allen (Edith Cowan University) who updated us on the Scholarship Fund that we have set up to enable a prospective PhD student to work in research with Dr Meghan Thomas at ParkC.
- 22nd June 2008: Dr Daniel Galvao (Edith Cowan University) spoke with us about research and exercise at The Vario Health Institute and ParkC.
- 27th April 2008: Approximately 40 YOG’s met for our usual bi-monthly get together. We started with a YOGA (!) session lead by one of our YOG’s, Barbara. It wasn’t what most of us thought was Yoga. There were no unusual movements or legs being lifted over heads. It was more like gentle stretching and gradually a noticeable “calm” presided over the room. Marvellous! After this calming session of Yoga we heard from Janet, a Pd nurse specialist who spoke to us about the differences in Young Onset Parkinson's compared to regular Parkinson's. It was both interesting and informative and ensured that we were up to date with current knowledge of our condition.
